This scene by French artist Maurice Vlaminck features a regular subject of the artist's practice. Rendered in gouache, acrylic, and India ink on paper, Vlaminck shows a solitary snowy road winding through a small village. Overhead, dark clouds battle with the fading blue sky as night begins to fall. Vlaminck often returned to this scene over and over again in his work, depicting it in every medium and every season. Although the angle and the clarity of details would change slightly with each rendition, Vlaminck clearly had a great fondness for this little road. In returning to it time and time again, Vlaminck follows in a tradition similar to Monet and his haystacks, one that develops an intimate knowledge of subject, light, and form. Provenance: Galerie Felix Vercel, New York.
