Description de l'oeuvre

A beautiful original mixed media drawing (charcoal, blue and pink pastel, wax…) by Jean Cocteau.
This portrait of a woman could possibly Edmée Cazalis’, the Countess Roederer (1887-1981). Another drawing dedicated to the countess herself was done at the same time on the same support and bears similarities. This one is dedicated to Jean, possibly Edmée’s son.

In both cases, the support is the cover of the program of the show « jeunes comédiens 37 » at the Nouveau Theatre Antoine in Paris which showed Macbeth (Shakespeare) and Œdipe Roi (sophocle) offered to audiences 1937. Cocteau was the stage director for both. Edmée Cazalis-Roederer was in charge of making costumes for Macbeth. Jean Cazalis, under the pseudonym Jean Stephane, was in charge of set design for Macbeth.

A beautiful and fresh little gem, with its combination of blue and pink pastels and the unusual addition of strong red wax for the rendering of the shawl. Not to mention the gentle face and eyes expression!
