The motif shows an Italian landscape with a rock formation, trees and a little stream near Perugia, Umbria.The painting is painted on wood, is in a very good state of preservation, and is in its original framing. Frame and painting belong together! The frame itself is typically Italian from around 1870.The Vedder family spent the summer and fall months from 1871-1880 in Perugia.  Based on this and the original framing, I believe that the present painting was created around 1873, when Vedder was living in the Villa Ansidei.
