Provenance Baltic Art Exhibition 1914 in Malmö Sweden – Collection Carl A.A.Lindh (1882-1970). He is known for his landscapes and naturalistic scenes, as shown here, in the Japanese style of painting combining Nihonga, traditional Japanese subjects, and Yoga, Western techniques. Signed ‘Sunshow’ instead of ‘Shunsho’, removing the H and adding a W, adapting his name to ‘Sunshow’ with meaning of ‘Show of the Sun’ & ‘Rising Sun’, recalling the Japanese flag. An effort to adapt to the culture of European visitors, as a Westernised signature became more accessible and/or more attention-grabbing. It was common practice in artistic exchanges at the time to seek to harmonise Japanese works in order to gain greater acceptance and recognition. It was a strategy that allowed Shunsho to stand out in a context where the few Japanese works were often exotic and intriguing to Swedish and European audiences.
