Paper applied on cardboard, Winchester collection (Rushbrooks Auctioneers 31-8-2021). Typical of the Romantic style of the early 19th century when he worked actively. and probably of 1830s-1850s, when he was interested in natural landscapes. The composition features a tranquil river flowing towards a misty background where buildings, castle, church, houses are visible, characteristic of the Romantic pastoral and poetic scenes. In the foreground, a couple sits by the river, with some cows in the water and a horse-drawn cart near a rustic house. The soft, nuanced tones of the watercolour, dominated by blue, beige and green tones, create an atmosphere of calm and serenity. The misty atmosphere and washed-out tones evoke the diffuse light of a morning or dusk, reinforcing the charm and nostalgia of an untouched and peaceful landscape. Bentley’s style, influenced by the English School of Watercolour, here highlights architectural detail and the simple beauty of rural life.
