Mixed media on paper applied on canvas. Provenance Göteborg Collection. This artwork appears to be made around 1881-85. It seems to be a painting with mixed-media on a lithographic base. This approach, combining lithography with additional painted details, allowed Munkácsy or his workshop to produce several versions of the work, making it more widely available while preserving the hand-painted elements for a unique touch. Given the popularity of Munkácsy’s art, it was common to create such versions for distribution among collectors, religious institutions, and art patrons. It may be linked with his signature in 1878 of a ten-year exclusive contract with the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer who bought his paintings and whose portrait he painted. Around 1880s, lithographic techniques were often employed to create “enhanced painted prints,” where a lithographic base served as the groundwork, and individual painted touches were added to make each piece unique and personal.
