Oil on canvas applied on canvas, stamped in black ink on verso on the canvas wood structure “261 JA”. Provenance Collection André Pieyre de Mandiargue famous writer. The first living foreign artist to be represented in the London National Gallery collection. Similar to the “The surprise” Oil on canvas kept at the London National Gallery Inv n°NG457 dated “before 1827” 65,2x54,3cm. This young woman appears to have been startled by something – she turns towards an unseen disturbance to the right and clasps her blouse to her chest. Although Dubufe was well known as a portraitist of the French aristocracy, the identity of this woman is unknown.
Aother one was sold at Christies London on the 10-7-2009 under lot 320 as “Portrait of a lady, bust-length, in a white gown”inscribed and dated 'C M Dubufe 1848' on an old label on the reverse. Dimensions 63.5x51cm.
