Jules Coignet was a notable landscape painter and draughtsman from France that traveled widely in Europe and Northern Africa. He often made studies of particular trees, and many of his oil paintings feature trees with exacting detail. 

This piece is one of his tree studies, made with pencil on paper. It stands out for it's attention to detail in the individual branches and leaves, the thick trunk resting against a large rock, and the diffuse background that merely suggests a landscape further in view.
