Description de l'oeuvre

Portrait of Molly (Le Bas) Brocas Burrows, this picture was painted by her brother Edward.  The significance of the mirror is of paramount importance to the paintings subject, the reflection represents the twin sister who was lost the year before, in 1944.  The sister was named Gwen, they were clearly very close as the photographs in the National Portrait Gallery in London show.  This is an emotional experience for both brother and sister, probably painted at the later stages of 1945 when everyone was looking for the positive and to move on, despite the horrors of the Second World War.
