Provenance : Galerie August Genner & co in Duisburg. Stetson made his first visit to Europe in 1897, where he visited Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, England and Italy. From 1901 to 1911, Stetson made his home in Rome; during 1909-10 his summers were spent at Viareggio and Capri. This work reflects a combination of artistic traditions: on the one hand, realism in the depiction of the village and its architecture; on the other, an impressionist and symbolist sensibility in the way light and space create an introspective atmosphere. The sea in the distance may symbolize infinity, adventure, or a promise of escape, while the house and the human figure anchor the scene in the reality of everyday life. It reflects a strong interest in the European artistic movements of his time. This work being part of Stetson's stylistic transition, in a quest for atmosphere and a desire to transcend simple realistic representation to evoke emotions and ideas.
