JAMES WATERSON HERALD (1859-1914)
Scottish painter in the ‘wet’ style associated with the Glasgow Boys, of whom he was a contemporary. Born in Forfar he trained in art and had a successful career in London before returning to Scotland to settle in Arbroath in 1901. Many of his subsequent works depict Scottish country and fishing towns, with figures on wet pavements being one of his favourite subjects. His portraits are also highly regarded. Worked mainly in watercolours and pastels. Watterson-Herald’s work is represented in several public galleries, including Arbroath Art Gallery and the City Art Centre in Edinburgh, and is much sought-after by private collectors.
