Louis Tytgadt ( Lovendegem , April 27, 1841 – Ghent , May 9, 1918), also known as Lodewijk Tytgadt, was a Flemish painter.
He was trained at the Ghent Academy by Théodore-Joseph Canneel and then took painting lessons in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel . He mainly painted historical and biblical scenes, as well as many portraits. Beguines and beguinages were also a popular subject.
In 1880 he was appointed teacher at the Ghent Academy, and he became director there from 1892 to 1902. His most important pupils were Georges Buysse , Jules De Bruycker , Jan Frans De Boever and Gustave Van de Woestijne .
He campaigned for the construction of a new Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent , which was built in 1902; he became president of this museum until his death.
