Provenance
According to family tradition, the painting would have been part of Princess Ulrika Eleonora's dowry of Denmark at the marriage of King Charles XI of Sweden in 1680 as an allegory of this event. In the estate register after Queen Ulrika Eleonora d.y.'s demise, which was established during the years 1742-45, mentions a "Historical piece about David and Abigail", which may have been a legacy from the mother, as Ulrika Eleonora dy did not make herself known as an art collector.
During the 19th century, the painting is owned by the knight's house secretary Oscar Silfversparre (1832-1910) and then inherited by his descendants.
