Description de l'oeuvre

Watercolour Ink, white Gouache on German Postkarte signed undistinctly (as often with aged watercolour or ink) with cyrilic NG, logical on a typically Russian subject. Probably study for a book illustration refused as contestant & provocative. In 1912-13 she went to Germany. “If I clash with society, this occurs only because the latter fails to understand the basis of art and not because of my individual peculiarities, which nobody is obliged to understand.” (1913). At first glance, a feminist claim with a woman dressed in Cossack who were exclusively men. Women had been gradually integrated but were not fighters. Goncharova makes them wear this costume. She likes to shock and upset the social conventions represented by the babushka on the right, who seems totally misunderstood. She says “I am a cosaque woman” fighting like them & for comparable ideals. It explains why the cosaque face looks like her as well as the woman applauding. Study on request.
