Description de l'oeuvre

DOMENICO PIOLA 1627 - 1703
An Allegory
Brush and brown ink, brown wash
Over black chalk
24.4 x 21.9 cm
Watermark: Three circles with Crest

The loose style of the present drawing is much rarer within the graphic oeuvre of Domenico Piola and much requested by the drawing collector. Comparative drawings are the “Seated Saint Luke” in the Hessischen Landesmuseum in Darmstadt (inv.no.4.W.179), the “Seated Saint John” in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (inv.no.6428), the “Saint Jerome meditating with Lion” and the “Return of the Prodigal Son” both kept in the Louvre in Paris (inv.nos.837-1-293, 873-2-75), and the “Allegory of Winter” kept in the Palazzo Rosso in Genua (inv.no.D.4485). As these comparative drawings are dated between the late1650’s and early 1660’s, a similar dating can be assigned to the present drawing.
