Jean Leymarie - Michel Melot, The Engravings of the Impressionists 1971, vol.1 N°24. Rare original engraving (etching and soft varnish) with warm tones of the 2nd state of the 1st plate on thin, slightly azure paper. Stamp printed with the signature at the bottom right. After the rare 1st state without signature, this 2nd signed state was limited to 35 to 50 copies. The plaque was scratched after printing & there was no reprinting. One of Renoir's most famous engraving. There are 2 prints with this title. The first is a sketch for the second. In the sketch, the woman with open arms offers herself to the happy god of the river. The final engraving where only his left arm is extended, is identical to a painted sketch intended for a decorative panel which has never been executed.
