Bartolomeusz Barbiers, born in Amsterdam in 1740, was the second son of Pieter Barbiers I, in whose workshop he learned his artistic skills. He was above all employed for theater decorations and drawings of his are conserved in the Rijksprinten-kabinett in Amsterdam. He was the master of Pieter Barbiers Bzn III and was well know for his landscapes which contained strong tonal colors. He died in his native city in 1808.

The present drawing, in its composition is very reminiscent of the 17th century painters and draughtsman, especially of the interior scenes of Ostade and Teniers. However, in contrast it is much calmer in atmosphere and the candle light recalls certain Carravagesque influences. The present work can certainly be ranked as the highest level of draughtsmanship by Bartolomeusz. Barbiers.
