Tiffany travelled extensively through Europe, North America, and in North Africa in 1870–71, with the painter Robert Swain Gifford (1840–1905), where he derived inspiration for paintings like The snake charmer in Tangier. Completed in 1872 and exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the painting shows as ours, Tiffany’s penchant for exotic art and architecture. Beginning in the late 1870s, Tiffany turned his attention to decorative arts and interiors, although he never abandoned painting. The paintings by Tiffany are not numerous, with only 5 portraits.
