Description de l'oeuvre
Study for the painting kept in the Abbey « Saint Pierre du Gros Cailloux » in Paris. Bellel received many official orders. His painting Caravane arabe was kept at the Palais de l'Elysee in Paris. The Senate keeps a tapestry of Gobelins he designed and he painted two large oil panels for the city hall of Paris whose sketches are kept at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. He is also known for his Orientalist paintings like this one.

The Gros-Caillou (big stone) is a megalith that marks the boundary between the abbeys of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Sainte-Geneviève. In July 1791, this place was marked by history after the shooting of the Champ de Mars. The neighborhood of Gros-Caillou in Paris 75007 holds a small place in the French Revolution but a bloody place. It is there that the repression of the prohibited demonstration of July 17, 1791 was the most brutal on the fugitives.
