While in the U.S. he traveled widely, painting and sketching in the Mississippi Valley in 1849; along the Ohio Valley and the eastern seaboard in 1850; from NYC through the South to Cuba in 1851; and along the upper Mississippi Valley, especially Minnesota, in 1852.
