Comments: Emigrated to Utah in 1862 with his parents who had converted to the LDS church. After study in Europe sponsored by the church, he returned to Utah on his way to the Monterey (CA) Coast where he painted until 1901. He was in the East briefly, sent by the church. In 1902 Hafen was again in Utah, where he had a studio in Springville. In 1907 he moved to Indiana, and there contracted pneumonia.
