Comments: One of the most important Beaux-Arts architects of the 19th century, he was also an important frame designer. His dynamic designs often included classic architectural elements or featured delicate reeding in a grill pattern. Among his friends for whom he designed frames were Saint-Gaudens, W.M. Chase, T.W. Dewing, J. La Farge, Geo. DeF. Brush, A. Thayer, J.S. Sargent, J.H. Twachtman, and many others. The best selection of his frames may be seen at the Freer Gallery., Wash, DC.
