-- Registration for Art Lectures now available

It is counting down to KAOHSIUNG TODAY! Officials of the event organizer,Taiwan Art Gallery Association, including Chairman Rick Wang, Secretary General Dr. Wenmei Yiu and Executive Director Emerson Wang have announced that the largest summer art fair is to be held from June 24 to 26 at Kaohsiung Exhibition Center. “The Taiwan Art Gallery Association is the most professional event planner in Taiwan, with more than 20 years of experience in organizing large international art exhibitions,” says Rick Wang. “To strike a balance between the art resources for the south and north parts of the island, we have taken an extended period of time studying the art market of Southern Taiwan. As a result, we have found that there are lots of potential collectors in Kaohsiung, who have an eclectic taste for art. After thorough consideration from various aspects, it was decided that the first KAOHSIUNG TODAY to be held in the city.’’

KAOHSIUNG TODAY is going to meet the competitive global art exhibition market headon with its local uniqueness and differentiation. In the exhibition, masterpieces of worldrenowned maestros such as Lee Kuang-Yu, Yang Chi-Hung, Liu Kuo-Sung、Yayoi Kusama and Sadamasa Montanaga will be shown. In addition, works of local artist communities of Kaohsiung, such as Fish Snipers and Southern Taiwan Art Groups, will be featured in the exhibition. It is also their debut in an art exhibition of such a scale and it also shows the unique curatorial point of view of KAOHSIUNG TODAY.

Modern Abstract painting maestro Ho Kan unveil his first-exposed work and demonstrates his support to KAOHSIUNG TODAY

Highly acclaimed expatriate artist Ho Kan, also known as the Ace of Modern Abstract art, will personally unveil his first-exposed work “Convolution” in the press gathering as a manifestation of his support to KAOHSIUNG TODAY. The piece, which is to be shown at KAOHSIUNG TODAY, is specifically presented in the color scheme of blue as a way the artist corresponds to the city’s coastal, oceanic southern island landscape. More of Ho Kan’s works are featured in the form of individual exhibition at the art fair.

Importance of art restoration highlighted in an effort to fight against extreme climate conditions

Following the trend of affordable art that has emerged in Taiwan in recent years, delightful, affordable art works have become the favorite among the working class with moderate income. It is always a great loss to the art owners if an art piece they own is damaged, regardless of its value.

Taiwan, where it is warm and humid year-round, preservingart works has always been a challenge. Therefore, an “art work restoration workshop” will be organized at KAOHSIUNG TODAY. Professional art restorers from the Conservation Center of the Office of Arts and Culture, Cheng Shiu University are invited to give a lecture on art restoration with an on-site demonstration. “The Conservation Center of the Office of Arts and Culture in Cheng Shiu University is one of the very few professional art restoration institutions in Taiwan. It was established in 2005 and has since taken a proactive role in art education and cultural asset restoration,” Executive Director of KAOHSIUNG TODAY, Emerson Wang, says. “KAOHSIUNG TODAY brought up the idea to collaborate with the center to showcase professional restoration techniques in the exhibition, hoping to present a distinct aspect of art industry and develop a new prospect for the event.”

Art conservation and restoration is essential knowledge for collectors and potential collectors. At the press gathering, restorer Dr. Ioseba Soraluze will demonstrate the process of removing yellowing varnish. Varnish is a common oil painting material. It is the solution formed when resin is dissolved with drying oil or volatile oil. After it dries up, it will form a transparent coating to protect the surface of the oil painting. Whether Varnish deteriorates is determined by factors such as its quality, painting techniques, the temperature and humidity.

Site-Specific art project: An intimate letter for someone you love

Site-specific art is a form of artwork that brings up by artists or curators created for a certain space with public. The 1st edition KAOHSIUNG TODAY is pleased to invite artist Lin Ging-Song to launch the site-specific art project: An intimate letter for someone you love. Coming from the concept of family letter, people can share their feeling or daily life with family or someone they love by writing down or painting on postcard. In addition, Lin Ging-Song, whose artwork has been chosen by President Tsai Ing-Wen as her new diplomatic leaflet is also one of Top 100 international visual designers by the renowned New York publisher Phaidon Press.

On the site of art fair, four postcards with different patterns will be offered; each person can make their own creative work by picking up two of the postcards. The completed work will be hung on the big tree built especially for the fair. In the press gathering, Secretary General Dr. Wenmei Yui also wrote a private family letter in person, and has invited the distinguished guest and media present to participate in the art project. These postcards will also be brought to the art fair and become a part of final work. In the end of the event, this site-specific artwork, which completed by public and artist, will be a unique gift that KAOHSIUNG TODAY presents to the city.
