ASIA CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW SPOTLIGHTS HONG KONG
Local emerging and mid-career artists a key focus in October
Hong Kong, Tuesday September 1: The 7 th edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show, which opens at the Conrad Hong Kong on Thursday October 8 th with an invitation-only VIP Collectors Preview, will present a diverse line-up of original paintings, limited editions, sculpture and photography, this time including a special focus on local artists.
Director Mark Saunderson explained: “We are excited to present some promising local young and mid-career talent at the Show from October 8 th to 11 th . Hong Kong has a lot of unsung artists, sometimes hidden from collectors and art buyers. It is hard for Hong Kong artists to get the attention they deserve – art gallery overhead is high, and gallerists carefully weigh representing lesser-known local artists versus a sometimes easier path. “We have been working for the last year to put together a strong selection of Hong Kong artists and more than 100 of their works at the upcoming Show. Artists will include Martin Lever (Li Wah), Rachel Cheung Wai-Sze, TK Chan, Andrea Chung, Bobo Po, David Chung, Dragon Ken, Eva Chan, Fi, Heidi Leung, Lee Hon Nam, Ling Kwok Po, Vicky Ng and Claire Billson.”
MARTIN LEVER (LI WAH) – HONG KONG
Martin Lever, known as Li Wah, has lived and worked in Hong Kong on and off for 36 years. Lever's collection of oil and acrylic paintings depict locations around Hong Kong from a bird's-eye view. Titled "Above/Below," his so-called "groundscapes" series, highlight the relationship between what happens at street level and life on the top floor of a skyscraper. The artist explains: "I was searching for a fresh way to visualise some of the stories that Hong Kong has to tell. The insight that I hit on was that we spend so much of our time up in the air in Hong Kong. It's a vertical city. We sleep on the 30 th floor, we eat on the 20 th and we work on the 10 th , but we very rarely look down." Lever has won numerous advertising industry awards, and is the author and illustrator of acclaimed children’s book series “The Bogeybugz.”
HONG HAOCHANG – CHINA
Career artist Hong Haochang paints in studios in Beijing and his hometown of Zhaotong in Yunnan Province. The artist graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1999, and is now one of the nation’s most respected oil painters. Almost 1,000 of his works have been collected by museums, galleries and private collectors in the USA, Japan, France, Sweden, Canada, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
JEAN MICHEL GARCZYNSKI – FRANCE
Jean Michel Garczynski, born in Paris in 1957, is a popular French contemporary expressionist artist, with an interesting twist – he is deeply attracted to and influenced by Chinese culture, and his works are very popular there. This journey began when he was invited to the to the International Art Fair in Shanghai in 2008, and he has since exhibited his works in art fairs all over the country. In 2014, the artist was awarded the Artistic Consultant of China Horse Industry Association (CHIA) in the Great Hall of the People. Garczynski is also a force in the advertising industry, working with L'Oreal de Paris, Guerlain, Hanae Mori, Van Cleef & Arpels, Nikon and others.
DU HAIJUN – CHINA
Du Haijun was born in Jiangsu province in 1978, graduated from China Central Academy of Fine Arts and has won several national and international awards, including the Excellence Award for the 11th National Fine Arts Exhibition, and the Golden Award for the International Salon of France. What we can see in Du’s work is his understanding of how urbanization remoulds cityscapes and how urban residences hide the everyday secrets of their inhabitants. His “N Windows” has been collected by the National Art Museum of China, and “Window” and “Cellist” by the Korean Consulate in Beijing.
MOON SHIN – KOREA & FRANCE
Moon Shin was born in Masan, Korea, and studied western painting at the Japanese Art School in Tokyo. He returned to Korea in 1945 and worked as a painter for 10 years, before moving to France. It was there that he transformed himself into a sculptor concentrating on three- dimensional structures. Moon Shin soon gained praise from Europe’s art elite, but decided to return to his hometown in 1980, and preserved his artistic soul by opening the Moon Shin Museum with which he was closely associated until his death in 1995.
TANG TSZ KIN (“DRAGON KEN”) –
HONG KONG
Hong Kong’s “Dragon Ken” is the founder and chairperson of the Hong Kong Creative Art Association; and an instructor at the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the YMCA. He was the champion of the 1998 Beijing Shanghai Guangzhou Hong Kong Youth Computer Graphic Competition (Advanced Level), received the Judges' list award of Mobile Art Expedition (2005) and was the champion of the Portraits of Dolphin – Art Competition (2006).
